Dan Michelson – CMO, Allscripts™

While attending the HIMSS09 Conference & Exhibition, EHRtv™ speaks with Dan Michelson, the Chief Marketing Officer of Allscripts™. He discusses the impact of the Stimulus package known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and the attached Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act funding. Allscripts believes the Time is NOW to become educated, evaluate your electronic medical record (EMR) software options, and implement an EMR/EHR (electronic medical record/ electronic health record) so the physicians are ready to take full advantage of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act funding. Allscripts offers financing programs that allow physicians to get started with EMR/EHR software for the first few months at no cost; with a reduced payment over the following 8 months. After that, the physician will have a relatively consistent EMR/EHR software payment over the next 5 years. These programs allow Allscripts EMR/EHR (electronic medical record/ electronic health record) users to be cash flow positive the first year, while they get ready for the Stimulus funding to hit in 2011.

Important Stimulus funding facts:

  1. The Stimulus payouts are front loaded; where 70% of the funding is paid in the first 2 years.
  2. The Stimulus funding is time stamped; starting in 2015, the federal government will implement penalties to medical practices that are not using a certified EMR/EHR (electronic medical record/ electronic health record).
  3. Physicians must be able to prove “Meaningful Use” with their acquired EMR/EHR (electronic medical record/ electronic health record) software system.

Information: Michelson also discusses the 4 exciting new innovations. The first is Allscripts Remote™ technology. Allscripts Remote allows a physician access to their existing Allscripts electronic patient record, or chart, from their mobile device. Currently, 8/2009, the Apple iPhone™ is the only type of mobile device compatible with Allscripts Remote. In the near future, BlackBerry® and Window Mobile® will join Allscripts Remote as optional mobile devices. Secondly, Allscripts offers a Patient Kiosk. Using the patient kiosk, patients are able to electronically check-in to the medical practice. This saves the administrative staff time and allows the physicians to see more patients. Allscripts also offers the GlucoPhone, which uses a cell phone to read a blood glucose strip results. Allscripts Prenatal is another exciting innovation, as a web-based solution that mirrors your existing workflow while offering integration options with EMR/EHR (electronic medical record/ electronic health record) products.
