Hello, I’m Dawn DiPaola, and today I will be discussing advancements in mobile health IT applications. Many are questioning how smart phones will be used in healthcare delivery.

We are seeing several EHR companies develop their technology to work with smart phones. One example is Dassault Systemes , an international leader in 3D and Product Lifecycle Management solution. It recently entered the electronic medical records market through a partnership with application developer echoBase, Inc. This partnership leverage echoBase’s Resonate iPhone application for healthcare providers and Dassalut Systemes’ ENOVIA V6 online and collaboration and data management solution. Together, the technologies will offer healthcare providers a single, secure user interface to patient records distributed across multiple IT systems. The iPhone application is available through the App Store. The technology will also be available for the iPad. With its richer user interface, the iPad will act as a comparison device to the iPhone for clinicians.

In addition, meridianEMR has released a native iPhone application mMobile. It will allow urologists and surgeons to access, update, and synchronize patient medical data with their office servers or meridianEMR’s mEHRxChange network. mMobile will be available at the Apple iTunes store. mMobile is unique in that it has been designed to be 100% operational regardless of internet connectivity, unlike web-based applications that require a full-time internet connection for use.

Voice recognition is another technology that is integrating with mobile devices. Nuance Communications has recently announced the availability of Dragon for E-mail dictation application on BlackBerry mobile devices. Dragon for E-Mail will allow BlackBerry users to easily speak and instantly see emails by simply dictating directly within the BlackBerry email client. The application is currently free to download for a limited time at dragonmobileapps.com
