Trish Calvarese – Chief Information Officer, Drexel University

Drexel University rolled out the Allscripts™ Enterprise electronic health record (EHR) system in 2005. It is installed over 11 specialties, expanding to corporate affiliate hospitals in Philadelphia, including Tenet Healthcare, as well as the city clinics specializing in OB care. Calvarese discusses the change in workflow within the clinics, brought on by the transition to electronic medical records (EMR). The physicians and staff work in a wireless environment with tablets, which helped to ease the adoption of the electronic medical record system. There are many benefits to using Allscripts EMR (electronic medical records), including more timely, multiple interfaces, ePrescribing, and electronic discharge summaries. Drexel formed a physician champion team to head the implementation of the electronic medical record system (EMR). Calvarese feels that the future of health information technology (HIT) is very bright, with physician motivation increasing.
